"Now it is time for the flourishing of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. That is why I wish for Sravasti Abbey to continue to increase, so a proper monastic Sangha will exist in the West."
- Panchen Otrul Rinpoche

What We Plan To Do
A Step Towards Peace: Building a Home for the Sangha to Sustain the Dharma is a four-phase building/renovation project to expand Sravasti Abbey's immediate residential accommodations and to lay the groundwork for future growth.

The $1,100,000 project will remodel the existing kitchen, lay the infrastructure for the Abbey's Master Plan, build the first monastic residence, and construct a retreat cabin.

The Monastic Residence is the first building in a detailed Master Plan. Eventually, Sravasti Abbey will grow to include a temple and library, a large guesthouse with kitchen/dining facilities, as many as four monastic residences, and more retreat cabins. We expect the current project to provide sufficient facilities for about five years.

1. Expand Kitchen/Dining Capacity - Completed
The kitchen remodel is complete! Sravasti Abbey's old family-sized kitchen and dining areas were too small to feed all the people who come for retreats and teachings.

Now, the newly remodeled kitchen can

  • comfortably and efficiently feed 35 people
  • provide dining seating for more than 20

2. Build Essential Infrastructure
Sravasti Abbey is located in rural Washington, where building requires creating an access road, bringing in additional power, drilling a well, and creating water and septic systems. By constructing these now, Sravasti Abbey will save thousands of dollars on the next phase of the Master Plan.

The infrastructure work will

  • allow access for construction and fire vehicles
  • provide water, power, heat, and septic service for the monastic residence
  • provide bathrooms for the community room and retreat cabins

3. Build a Monastic Residence: Gotami House
Sravasti Abbey's capacity to house residents and guests is continually strained. Based on the Abbey's present population, Gotami House will be a home for nuns.

Gotami House will

  • house up to 16 people
  • provide 2 wheelchair accessible rooms
  • create space for the resident community to grow
  • increase guest capacity in the short term
4. Retreat Cabin with bath/shower rooms

A 500 square foot, two-room retreat cabin will add this space
  • provide housing for a guest teacher and attendant
  • accommodate 2 private retreatants in separate rooms
  • provide a bathroom and shower for the present retreat cabin and community room
