May 2010 - Making It Snug
Winters can be chilly at Sravasti Abbey, so having good insulation is important. The retreat cabin has the same "green" insulating foam that we used in Gotami House. The insulation is blown into the frame and quickly hardens to a texture like styrofoam. Then it's shaved so that it’s smooth and flat for the drywall which will cover it. A soy-based product, the foamy insulation completely seals the walls and is much superior to normal fiberglass insulation for holding in the heat.
April 2010 -- Around and Under the Cabin
Ven. Jampel and Tsundru are getting back to work after the long winter. The waste lines and septic components of the plumbing system are in and the new shower is installed. They are filling the crawl space under the cabin with all the unseen parts that are necessary to create a functional and comfortable cabin for our guest teachers and retreatants. What's next? Insulation and sheetrocking. Stay tuned . . .
January 2010 -- Retreat Cabin in Process
There's one more significant piece to the "Step Towards "Peace" building project: the two-room retreat cabin. It's especially designed for our guest teachers, but guest retreatants will be able to take advantage of it too.
Ven. Jampel designed the cabin and leads the construction, which has continued steadily from Septermber to December. With roof, doors, windows, and the siding in place, the cabin will be snug through the winter while Abbey residents do retreat. Come March, however, we'll be back at work to finish the interior. We plan to have it ready by summer.
