PREPARING FOR ORDINATION
When Venerable informs the community and the Exploring Monastic Life participants that a Vinaya master can come to give ordination to Jampel, we are very excited. The big surprise is that Jampel and the community have less than three days to get ready.
Without skipping a beat, we all jump in and start sewing the robes and cleaning the Abbey. Jampel focuses his attention on learning the ceremony and the precepts with guidance from Venerable Chodron, as well as how to wear the newly sewn robes.
On September 1, the head shaving ceremony begins soon after breakfast. It is the start of a wonderful, historic day.

“It fit Venerable Chonyi just fine.” Venerable Chodron shares a funny moment with Jampel as he tries on a much-too-small pre-ordination coat he will wear prior to receiving his robes.

Jampel takes a break from his studies to help Karen with his lower skirt, called a shemtab.
Cristina’s attention to detail makes her a valuable contributor to the sewing team.
Venerable Tarpa takes on the daunting task of sewing Jampel’s chogu, an intricate outer robe worn for teachings and special events.
“This fold goes here like this…” Venerable Tarpa gives Jampel a quick tutorial on putting on the shemtab.

“Make sure your feet are tucked in and not seen.” Venerable Semkye shows Jampel how to sit in his lower robe.

“Not bad for a first try, Jampel.”

Venerable Jendy and Venerable Chodron begin the head shaving the morning of the ordination.
Guests gather around and chant the Buddha’s mantra during the head shaving.
Jampel is ready to greet the bhikshus who will give him the novice vows.
