” We live in an interdependent world. What we do matters.”
Recalling 2016 conjures an array of images–some discordant and some beautiful. Pundits propose that 2016 was a year that changed the world. And yet, from a Buddhist perspective, everything changes moment by moment, arising and ceasing due to causes and conditions. That shows that we live in an interdependent world, and what we do matters.
From our Buddhist view, we know that benefitting others is good for us; we benefit from others’ well-being. To live harmoniously with others, we must respect and take care of each other. At Sravasti Abbey we strive to live these values on an individual basis and to share them with others. This is our practice and our mission. With your compassionate support, we have done so steadily and will continue to so. Together, we are able to offer the Buddha’s teachings in continually widening circles.
It seems that our slogan, creating peace in a chaotic world, becomes more urgent and meaningful with each year. It’s also clear that people’s thirst for Buddha’s teachings and their need for community support in practicing them continue to grow. The network of people around the world dedicated to enacting this slogan is growing.
Since the Buddha’s time, the sangha exists solely in dependence on others’ kindness. With your support, we strive earnestly to enact his teachings and share them, ever widening the circle of Dharma. As all of us—monastics and lay people alike—cultivate the compassion and wisdom necessary for our own awakening, may we continue to enhance our aspiration to awaken compassion in the heart of every single being and create peace in this chaotic world.
The annual report gives highlights of how we enacted this mission last year and what we aspire to do in the future. We hope you enjoy it!
