with Ven. Thubten Chodron and the Sravasti Abbey Community

A Study and Community Experience

Abbess teaches.
Exploring Monastic Life is for qualified lay people exploring the possibility of ordination, and for monks and nuns that have been ordained for five years or less.

Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron teaches from over 40 years of experience as a monastic. In addition to receiving daily teachings, you will be able to interact with members of Abbey’s resident monastic community.

Applicants must have taken refuge in the Three Jewels at least one year ago and must not be in a long-term relationship. Priority will be given to applicants under 50 years old.

Arrive by 4 pm on June 30. Depart July 19 after lunch.

  • Admission is by application. All applications are reviewed by the abbess.
  • If you are accepted, we encourage participants to generate merit with a dana offering for the program. We recommend at least $450. Your generosity supports fellow participants, involving everyone in the program to create merit to explore monastic life together.

  • If you’ve been exposed to someone who has Covid, please postpone your visit.
  • If you start having respiratory systems while you’re here we’ll do a rapid test to make sure you don’t have Covid.

More about the teacher

Venerable Thubten Chodron is an author, teacher, and the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey, one of the first Tibetan Buddhist training monasteries for Western nuns and monks in the US. She graduated from UCLA, and did graduate work in education at USC. Ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun in 1977, she has studied extensively with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tsenshab Serkong Rinpoche, and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. She received full ordination as a bhikshuni in 1986.

She has published many books on Buddhist philosophy and meditation, including seven volumes (so far) in The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, co-authored with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with whom she has studied for nearly forty years.

Venerable Chodron teaches worldwide and is known for her warm, practical, and humorous explanations of how to apply Buddhist teachings in daily life.
