Geshe Yeshi Lhundup continues teachings on

Illumination of the Thought

Je Tsongkhapa’s commentary on Chandrakirti’s Supplement to the Middle Way

October 3-November 11 –  Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Join us in person or online as we welcome Geshe Yeshi Lhundup for an extended visit to continue his teaching on Je Tsongkhapa’s Illumination of the Thought, a commentary on Chandrakirti’s Supplement to the Middle Way.

Geshela’s long visit offers a chance to live, train, and offer service with the Sravasti Abbey community. We’ll receive these teachings three times a week, along with other regularly scheduled teachings.

The teachings will also be streamed live. However, class reviews will be held in person only.

Chandrakirti’s Supplement to the Middle Way is prized in Tibetan Buddhism as a supreme explanation of the Middle Way philosophy, considered the highest—that is, the most subtle—understanding of Buddha’s teachings. Written in the 7th Century, it is an introduction to the Middle Way teachings of Nagarjuna, who illuminated the Prajnaparamita Sutras and promoted the Buddha’s teachings on the bodhisattva path to Buddhahood. Je Tsongkhapa’s commentary is prized in the Gelugpa tradition for its brilliant clarification of key points in the Prasangika view.

This course is a rare opportunity for students of Buddhist philosophy and lovers of the teachings on the Middle Way. It’s a chance to study an important text in depth with a resident geshe and experience monastic community. This teaching is suitable for students who have a grounding in the stages of the path and Buddhist philosophy. It is not for beginners.

All Abbey Dharma courses are offered freely, and we welcome your contributions. You can make offerings any time here.

Course Materials

Prepare for the course by watching Geshe-la’s initial teachings on this text in 2019, 2020, 2021. The teachings can be found here.

We begin with chanting the Homage to Manjushri before teachings.

Short mandala offering

This ground, anointed with perfume, flowers strewn,
Mount Meru, four lands, sun and moon,
Imagined as a Buddha land and offered to you
May all beings enjoy this pure land.

Mandala offering to request teachings

Venerable holy gurus, in the space of your truth body,
from billowing clouds of your wisdom and love,
let fall the rain of the profound and extensive Dharma
in whatever form is suitable for subduing sentient beings.

idam guru ratna mandala kam nirya tayami

Refuge and bodhicitta

I take refuge until I have awakened
in the Buddhas, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
By the merit I create by listening to the Dharma,
may I attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings. (3x)

Mandala offering after teachings

May the spiritual teachers who lead me on the sacred path
and all spiritual friends who practice it have long life.
May I pacify completely all outer and inner hindrances –
grant such inspiration, I pray.

May the lives of the venerable spiritual mentors be stable,
and their divine actions spread in the ten directions.
May the light of Lobsang’s teaching, dispelling the darkness
of the beings in the three worlds, always increase.

idam guru ratna mandala kam nirya tayami

Dedication of merit

Due to this merit may we soon
Attain the awakened state of Vajrasattva,
That we may be able to liberate
All sentient beings from their sufferings.
May the precious bodhi mind
Not yet born arise and grow.
May that born have no decline,
But increase forever more.

Long life prayer for His Holiness the Dalai Lama

In the snowy mountain pure land
You’re the source of good and happiness.
Powerful Tenzin Gyatso Chenresig,
May you stay until samsara ends.
