Ven. Sangye Khadro leads the Abbey’s annual one-week retreat. Join us for meditation on Green Tara, embodiment of the enlightening influence of all the Buddhas. In his advice about practices to mitigate the COVID pandemic, His Holiness the Dalai Lama recommends chanting Tara’s mantra. (See the article.)

Ven. Sangye Khadro will also teach on selected verses from Chapter 9—the wisdom chapter—of Shantideva’s Guide to a Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. A translation of Shantideva’s Chapter 9 and the Green Tara practice will be provided for retreat participants. Watch for this after July 1.

For centuries practitioners have turned to Tara—a feminine embodiment of enlightenment—for protection from both internal and external dangers, from fire and disease to anger and ignorance. The main purpose for practicing Tara meditation is to free us from all sufferings and their causes and bring us to liberation and awakening.

The retreat will include teachings, daily practice sessions, and facilitated discussions

“It is recommended that those who join this retreat are familiar with Tibetan Buddhist practice—both the practice of visualizing deities and reciting prayers and mantras, and the practice of analytical meditation on the Lam Rim (Stages of the Path to Enlightenment)—because the daily meditation sessions will include both of these elements.””

“Some of the daily talks will include an explanation of the Tara practice, but it would be helpful to have some familiarity with such practices beforehand. Read about the Tara practice in How to Free your Mind: Tara the Liberator, by Ven. Thubten Chodron.

“If you are not familiar with analytic meditation, but sincerely wish to join the retreat, I advise you to read parts 3, 4, and 5 in Ven. Thubten Chodron’s, Open Heart Clear Mind (Snow Lion Publications) and/or parts 4 and 5 in How to Meditate by Kathleen McDonald (Wisdom Publications). Both books are available from Amazon, etc.

“Some of the daily talks will be on Chapter 9 of Shantideva’s  Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. The topic of this chapter is emptiness, the final mode of existence of all things. This is one of the most advanced and difficult topics in Buddhism, so be prepared for a challenge!

“Again, some familiarity with more basic Buddhist teaching—the Four Noble Truths and the Lam Rim—is recommended, but the book Open Heart Clear Mind will provide some of that basic material.”
