Green Tara Retreat with Ven. Sangye Khadro
July 3 @ 3:00 pm - July 10 @ 2:00 pm PDT
Ven. Sangye Khadro leads the Abbey’s annual one-week retreat. Join us for meditation on Green Tara, embodiment of the enlightening influence of all the Buddhas. She will also teach on selected verses from Chapter 9—the wisdom chapter—of Shantideva’s Guide to a Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.
For centuries practitioners have turned to Tara—a feminine embodiment of enlightenment—for protection from both internal and external dangers, ranging from fire to anger and ignorance. The main purpose for practicing Tara meditation is to free us from all sufferings and their causes and bring us to liberation and awakening.
The retreat will include teachings with Ven. Sangye Khadro as well as several daily practice sessions, and we will hold noble silence. While beginners are welcomed, some meditation experience is suggested. To learn more about the Tara practice, you can read How to Free your Mind: Tara he Liberator, by Ven. Thubten Chodron.
California-born, Ven. Sangye Khadro ordained as a Buddhist nun at Kopan Monastery in Nepal in 1974, and took the full (bhikshuni) ordination in 1988. She has studied Buddhism with many great masters including Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey, and Khensur Jampa Tegchok. She began teaching in 1979 and was a resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore for 11 years. She is the author several books, including How to Meditate, now in its 17th printing.
Arrive by 3:00 on Friday. Retreat ends after 2:00 the following Friday.
