​​The 70 topics are the main subject matter of Ornament for Clear Realization, a text by Maitreya that is the basis for the lamrim, the stages of the path to enlightenment. The “Ornament” is one of the five classical Indian texts studied in Tibetan monasteries; students typically spend six to seven years learning, debating, and meditating on this text.

The “Ornament” is divided into eight chapters, each presenting one of eight categories, or clear realizations, that are attained by bodhisattvas as they progress to enlightenment. Each of the eight categories/clear realizations is explained by way of a certain number of topics, for a total of 70 topics. Included among the topics are bodhicitta, buddha nature, the Mahayana path of seeing, and the four kayas (bodies) of a buddha.

Studying this subject of 70 Topics thus provides an overview of this important text, Ornament for Clear Realization, and an overview of the bodhisattvas’ path to full awakening, Buddhahood.
