Lama Tsongkhapa’s Middle Length Lamrim
with Ven. Sangye Khadro

Lamrim (stages of the path) is a genre of texts and teachings that lays out the main points of the Buddha’s teachings in a step-by-step manner showing us how to transform ourselves from an ordinary, unawakened being into an awakened being, a buddha.

The great Indian master Atisa wrote the first lamrim text, A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, in the eleventh century and over the next millennium, other lamrim texts of varying lengths were composed by Tibetan masters such as Lama Tsongkhapa and several of the Dalai Lamas.

In these Friday-night classes during November and December, we will begin to study The Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment by Tsongkhapa, which was recently translated into English and published by Wisdom.

Tsongkhapa composed this text towards the end of his life as an abbreviated version of his Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim Chenmo), but it is believed to contain his final views on the important topic of emptiness.

Jeffrey Hopkins, who translated the Special Insight section of the Middle-Length Lamrim in his book, Tsong-Kha-pa’s Final Exposition of Wisdom, writes:

Here Tsong-kha-pa presents the topic of wisdom in a far more accessible manner than he did sixteen years earlier in his Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. In other sections of the Medium-Length Exposition he merely condenses the Great Treatise, but for the section on wisdom he structures a new composition … The most striking addition is the long section on the two truths… for which there is no corresponding section in the Great Treatise.

Those wishing to follow this class may wish to purchase the complete translation from Wisdom Publications, entitled The Middle-Length Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment by Tsongkhapa, translated by Philip Quarcoo. Wisdom Publications, 2021.
