Hybrid Hybrid Event

Standing up for Compassion
with Vens. Thubten Semkye and Thubten Jigme

April 4 – 6

Join Vens. Semkye and Jigme for a weekend focused on how to rely on ethics and compassion to keep our hearts open and wisely engaged in a crazy world. Teachings will draw from Ven. Thubten Chodron’s Buddhism for Beginners. This retreat is suitable for beginners and long-term practitioners as we explore together ways to keep our own moral compass pointed in the right direction.

All Abbey Dharma programs are offered freely, and your offering is welcomed. Make an offering here.

Registration information

Teachings will be streamed on YouTube Live. Discussion groups and meditations will be available via Zoom.

If you have any of these symptoms, please re-schedule your visit: Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.

More about the teachers

Ven. Thubten Semkye was the Abbey’s first lay resident. She met Venerable Chodron at the Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle in 1996 and took refuge with her in 1999. When the land was acquired for the Abbey in 2003, Ven. Semkye coordinated volunteers for the initial move-in and early remodeling.

A founder of Friends of Sravasti Abbey, she accepted the position of chairperson to provide the four requisites for the monastic community. Realizing that was a difficult task to do from 350 miles away, she moved to the Abbey in spring 2004.

Although she didn’t originally see ordination in her future, after the 2006 Chenrezig retreat when she spent half of her meditation time reflecting on death and impermanence, Ven. Semkye realized that ordaining would be the wisest, most compassionate use of her life. She became the Abbey’s third nun in 2007. In 2010 she received bhikshuni ordination at Miao Fa Chan Temple in Taiwan.

Ven. Thubten Jigme met Venerable Chodron in 1998 at Cloud Mountain Retreat Center. She took refuge in 1999 and attended Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle, where Ven. Chodron was the resident teacher.

She moved to the Abbey in 2008 and took śrāmaṇerikā and śikṣamāṇā vows with Venerable Chodron as her preceptor in March 2009. In 2011, along with Ven. Chonyi, she received bhikshuni ordination at Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan.
