Sowing Seeds of Dharma in the Wild West
December 12, 2023
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
When American nun Venerable Thubten Chodron met her first teachers in the 1970s, Buddhadharma had barely begun to arrive in her homeland.
Inspired by what she heard, she left everything behind to study with Tibetan masters in India and Nepal, and was soon sent out to teach the Dharma. She was among the first Western nuns to take bhikshuni ordination in Taiwan 1986.
That’s when she began to dream of founding a training monastery for American Buddhists in a Christian country. Through many challenges, Ven. Chodron continued to study, practice, teach, write, and nurture her vision.
At last, in 2003, she founded Sravasti Abbey in Newport, Washington, USA. From three residents—herself and two cats—the Abbey has grown into a vibrant community of 24 monastics (and four cats), whose Dharma outreach spreads far beyond US borders to touch the entire world.
Join Venerable Thubten Chodron as she shares her journey as a Western nun ordained for 46 years, and how she came to realize her aspiration to establish a monastic community in the West.
With consecutive translation into Chinese.
All Abbey Dharma programs are offered freely, and your offering is welcomed.
