Refuge Gives Us Hope
from Awaken Every Day:
365 Buddhist Reflections to Invite Mindfulness and Joy
by Ven. Thubten Chodron
Taking refuge daily in the Three Jewels—the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha—helps us overcome feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and meaninglessness.
Turning to the Three Jewels for guidance by studying and practicing the Dharma teachings gives us clarity and confidence about what we’re doing and where we’re heading in life.
Refuge in the Dharma, especially, reminds us that ignorance, afflictions, and karma can be counteracted. There is a path to train our minds to eradicate the afflictions, and there is a way to overcome our self-centeredness and work wholeheartedly for the benefit of all living beings.
This worldview inspires us to practice the path to attain liberation and awakening, which gives our lives great meaning and purpose.
